Character Will Keep You Where the Spotlight Can’t
What No One Tells You About Sustaining What God Builds
Psalm 26:2 – “Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; try my reins and my heart.”
Proverbs 11:3 – “The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.”
My spiritual father was a legendary faith teacher named Dr. Norvel Hayes. His teachings on faith, deliverance, worship, and obeying the Holy Spirit radically changed my life as a young man. God privileged me to walk closely with him. I observed his character, his wisdom, and his relentless tenacity for the Lord.
Dr. Norvel wasn’t just known for revelation, he was known for unshakable faith and fierce obedience. He walked with other generals of faith like R.W. Schambach, Kenneth E. Hagin, and Bishop Keith Butler. He was an uncommon man who hated the devil and lived by bold, mountain-moving faith.
Some of my greatest times with him weren’t on stages, they were in green rooms, in his pool, or over meals. He was always in teach mode. Always sowing wisdom. I’ll never forget one conversation in particular. We were in a green room when he said to me:
“Ryan, remember something, every 10 years or so in the Body of Christ, a new name rises to the top. They become the ‘it’ speaker, traveling from place to place. But most of them will collapse... because they don’t have the character to sustain their promotion.”
That statement startled me. And it changed me.
Your Gift May Get You There, But Only Character Can Keep You There
That warning caused me to reflect on the need for deep inner work. You see, your gifting can unlock doors. Your charisma can draw crowds. But your character is what keeps you standing when pressure comes.
We love to celebrate the anointing. We celebrate calling, purpose, visibility, and influence. But what many don’t realize is this: you can be extremely gifted and deeply wounded at the same time. Gifts are free but healing is a choice. Character must be forged.
Think of David. He was anointed in private, yet sent to the wilderness before the palace. Why? Because God had to shape his character. His calling was real. His anointing was valid. But his inner man had to be developed before he could carry the weight of the throne.
The Cost of Ignoring Character
Years later, after my spiritual father passed on, I found myself reflecting deeply on his wisdom. I was sitting behind a powerful conference host, gifted, charismatic, and awakening destinies around the world. Suddenly, I was caught into a vivid, prophetic vision.
I saw him assassinated.
At first, I thought it was a physical threat. I was about to run and warn his staff when the Holy Spirit interrupted me:
“What you’re seeing is spiritual. The enemy has laid traps to destroy him through temptation.”
God showed me that hell wasn’t just attacking his platform, it was after his character. The devil wanted the leader to fall… because once the shepherd is struck, the sheep scatter.
Tragically, the vision came to pass. That once-thriving ministry fell into scandal. The gifting remained, but the integrity eroded. His ministry scattered. People were wounded and disillusioned. And all I could hear were the echoing words of my father:
“They collapse because they don’t have the character to sustain their promotion.”
Character is a Daily Decision
What’s the lesson? Character counts.
It doesn’t matter how anointed you are, if you don’t have integrity, the pressure of the spotlight will crush you.
Let me ask you a few hard questions:
What difficult process are you avoiding?
What conversation have you rejected because it felt like offense instead of correction?
Are you allowing mentors to speak into your blind spots?
I’m grateful that my spiritual father didn’t just affirm me, he also corrected me. He didn’t always say what I wanted to hear, but he said what I needed to hear. I didn’t run when I got offended. I stayed. I learned. I let the tough moments shape me. I chose the slow route. I didn’t take shortcuts. And I believe that’s why, by God’s grace, I’ve walked in three decades of ministry without scandal.
Don’t Just Pray for Doors…Pray for Grit
This generation is hungry for visibility, platform, and promotion. But what we need most is depth, purity, and maturity.
Be the person who values process. Who doesn’t shortcut growth. Who builds from the inside out.
Ask God to work on your heart, not just your highlight reel.
Ask Him to give you the courage to face your inner world so that you can withstand the weight of your calling.
It’s your character that will keep you standing when everything else is shaking.
Let’s pray together:
Lord, lead me and guide me into your heart! I want to think like you, live like you and love like you. Mold me, form me, and keep me as I become more like you. Let me walk in wisdom, integrity, and obedience. Lead me away from temptation and into righteousness. Create in me a clean heart oh God! Cause me to walk in the way of holiness and purity, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Character counts. Build it now.

My gosh so very powerful and so grateful for this today! Yes it’s all about character development and that’s why I love David and the Psalms so much. I too was taken into the wilderness these last 5 years to do what was needed before the release and activation.
I’ve been a sold out follower and lover of Holy Spirit over 45 years…BUT GOD. It has begun all glory to God forevermore 🙌🏻🦅🙌🏻🦅.
P.s. so grateful for this platform you have been given it is bearing much fruit, God continue to bless you richly Apostle
